whiplash
it hurts
when you have decided
to be free;
titles are handed out
readily,
but nobility has a price
it carries weight
turning 180°
and falling back
to start
can snap
that delicate mechanism
known as your back
and rip you
asunder
unless
you possess
flexibility and
resiliency;
as being schooled
in the movements
of birds and
angels
as I lie here, resting my back
from a day of laboring at one of
the hundred horrible jobs I’ve had over the years,
I reflect on the emotions
that have traveled
up and down
this bent spine
of mine
I become aware of what
has not been done,
the various manifestations
of which my life has
sought to take shape
and yet failed
for various reasons
I recall seeing a sign
at the chiropractor’s office:
“Your Back Is Your Life Line!
Get It Straight!”
It is time to change
the way I sit,
to sit up straighter,
seeing straight ahead
to the new things
coming this way
time to change
the way I sit,
and the way
old things
sit
with me
